Abstract:

Research on language and gender is characterized nowadays by its interdisciplinary nature. The studies included within this field focus on very different aspects and come from disciplines as linguistics, sociolinguistics, social psychology or anthropology. In this monograph of Estudios de Sociolingüística we try to show precisely this diversity of approaches. The articles we present here address the study of this relationship through the analysis of such diverse aspects as the sexist uses of language, talk in interaction, sexuality, mass-media discourse, and women’s and men’s communicative styles at work. In this introduction we present each of the articles in relation to the area of study within they fall, whilst we review briefly the beginnings, development and current state of research on language and gender.
